why x mark for wrong &tick mark for right?

A tick/check mark is used to indicate yes .its opposite is the cross x though it can also be positive as in elections.

in usa cross mark is using for checking square box. but in finland &sweden the tick is indicating "no" rather than yes.
in encient rome 'V' used for marking items in the checklists and in latin word is vertis/truth

but another theory is its comes from pountain pens .the ink would not always start flowing without some initial action.the down stroke of the nib was enough to get the ink flowing adn then it was available for upstroke.
